HARRISBURG - On the heels of Gov. Tom Wolf’s declaration of the Commonwealth’s heroin and opioid epidemic as a statewide emergency, PA Chamber of Business and Industry President and CEO Gene Barr issued the following statement regarding S.B. 936 – legislation that would help fight this epidemic as it relates to injured workers by implementing a prescription drug formulary for workers’ compensation.
“We fully support the governor and legislature’s bipartisan efforts to combat the opioid crisis that has touched every corner of the Commonwealth, impacting thousands of families throughout the state. Part of this strategy should be addressing the overuse and abuse of prescription drugs among injured workers by passing S.B. 936. Other states that have implemented this common-sense policy have shown a reduction in the overuse of and addiction to prescription drugs among those injured on the job. With the opioid addiction crisis having officially reached emergency status, the time is now for Pennsylvania to adopt this important measure.
“With the legislature set to return to session at the end of the month, we urge the House to quickly act on S.B. 936 and send this important bill to the governor’s desk for his signature. Addressing the state’s opioid epidemic should be a top priority for all of our elected officials. This legislation will build on the work that’s already been done and help injured workers avoid the pitfalls of the overprescribing of opioids.”
