Polling shows likely voters in Pa. solidly oppose Biden-Harris gas-car ban and consider the issue ‘important’ for 2024

HARRISBURG – New polling conducted in Pennsylvania on behalf of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry and American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) shows that among likely voters, the United States is on the wrong track and there is strong opposition to government policies designed to ban new gas-powered vehicles. Further, a supermajority of likely voters says that this policy issue will be important to them when deciding which elected officials to support in 2024.

The polling — fielded in Pennsylvania between June 29 – July 1 — was conducted by Remington Research Group and measured likely voter sentiment around the direction of the country, issue importance, gas-car bans, and support for candidates who embrace such policies. Highlights of the polls are as follows:

Pennsylvanians believe the United States is headed in the wrong direction.

  • 59 percent wrong track, 33 percent right track, 8 percent not sure

On a generic Congressional ballot, Republicans lead Democrats in Pennsylvania.

  • 49 percent Republican, 47 percent Democrat, 4 percent undecided

The majority of likely voters in Pennsylvania oppose gas-car bans.

  • 60 percent oppose, 20 percent support, 21 percent undecided

A supermajority in Pennsylvania reports that a candidate’s position on stopping bans on new gas cars is an important factor in their vote.

  • 69 percent important, 14 percent not important

Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry President and CEO Luke Bernstein issued the following statement on the new polling:

“This new polling shows a discouraging trend of Pennsylvanians believing that America is on the wrong track,” Bernstein said. “From a business community perspective, these concerns are no doubt exacerbated by burdensome regulations and unpopular policies emanating from Washington. Our national leaders should stand up for consumers and end harmful regulations like the EPA’s gas car ban and others that are detrimental to economic growth.”

AFPM President and CEO Chet Thompson also issued the following statement:

“This new polling underscores what we have been hearing from the American people of all political stripes for months—that they do not want the government banning gas cars, mandating electric vehicles, or imposing regulations that restrict access to the types of cars that best meet a family’s needs and budget,” Thompson said. “Elected officials should take note that the American people care about this issue and are watching to see whether Congress will stand up and overturn EPA’s regulation banning the sale of most new gas cars.”

Methodology:
Survey conducted June 29 through July 1, 2024. 673 likely 2024 General Election voters participated in the survey. Survey weighted to match expected turnout demographics for the 2024 General Election. The margin of Error is +/- 4 percent with a 95 percent level of confidence. Totals do not always equal 100 percent due to rounding.
