HARRISBURG - ChamberPAC, the political arm of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, today announced its endorsement of state Sen. John Rafferty, R-Montgomery, for Pennsylvania Attorney General.
Rafferty will face Democratic Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro in the General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
“John Rafferty’s previous role as a deputy attorney general, coupled with his experience practicing law in the private sector make him uniquely qualified to be Pennsylvania’s next Attorney General,” said PA Chamber President Gene Barr. “During his tenure as a state senator, Senator Rafferty has pushed forward proposals to bring more fairness to the Commonwealth’s legal climate. He is also dedicated to making the citizens of Pennsylvania safer and more secure, by pledging to combat the state’s growing heroin epidemic, uphold the laws of the Commonwealth and bring integrity to the Office of Attorney General.”
A native of Montgomery County, Rafferty has represented the 44th State Senatorial District since 2003. As chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, Rafferty played a pivotal role in the passage of Act 89 of 2013 – a long-term transportation funding plan for the Commonwealth. He also serves as vice-chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and previously served on the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. In 2013, Rafferty was appointed to the Pennsylvania Commission on Sentencing. Prior to running for elected office, he served as a deputy attorney general under the Office of Attorney General’s Criminal Law Division, where he focused on investigating and prosecuting Medicaid fraud. He also practiced law in the private sector; concentrating on education, real estate, zoning, business and estate law.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry for Attorney General,” Rafferty said. “I look forward to working with organizations like the Pennsylvania Chamber to be a sounding board to the Office of Attorney General when dealing with a variety of important issues that affect everyday Pennsylvanians lives. Understanding the role of Attorney General is vital to the success of all Pennsylvanians. The Attorney General is not elected to be a lawmaker or to use litigation as way to shape policy. The Attorney General is elected to be the Commonwealth’s top law enforcer. As Attorney General, I pledge to defend the Constitution and laws of our Commonwealth and work to make Pennsylvania a better place to live, work and raise our families."
“With his well-rounded legal and legislative expertise, John Rafferty will be an effective Attorney General who will dutifully carry out the many important responsibilities that fall under the purview of the office. On behalf of the Pennsylvania Chamber’s broad-based membership, ChamberPAC urges Pennsylvania voters to support John Rafferty for Attorney General in the upcoming November General Election,” Barr added.
Rafferty earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He also has a master’s degree from Beaver College and a law degree from Temple University. He resides in Montgomery County.
