2017 Pittsburgh Human Resources Conference—the world of human resources is an ever-evolving environment, constantly shifting as legislation, regulation and court decisions change the landscape of requirements for businesses. HR professionals are responsible for applying these ever-evolving rules and shifting guidelines to real world situations that are rarely clear cut.

A complement to our very popular Annual HR Conference which has been held for over 30 years, the Pennsylvania Chamber presents top experts and thought leaders to give their perspectives and try to make sense of a collection of HR topics businesses have told us are among the most difficult and confusing:

  • Employee Handbooks Do’s and Don’ts—strategies to consider regarding the scope, nature and tone of your employee handbook; the mandatory policies; the optional policies; the most common provisions that the NLRB finds unlawful; and more
  • Managing Leaves of Absence under the FMLA—the basic types of leave under FMLA; the first steps an employer should take when notified of a leave request; how to calculate the 12-month period; intermittent leave and reduced leave; and more
  • Common Wage and Hour Mistakes: Best Practices to Protect Your Company—Wage and Hour continues to be one of the most confusing of all human resources compliance issues. Hear first-hand from a DOL Investigator from the U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division to review those areas causing companies the most trouble.
  • Employment Law Update—a brief update of employment legislative issues to help attendees plan for changes that may occur in 2018

The Keynote: Drug and Alcohol Testing in the Workplace—with the heroin and opioid epidemic sweeping the nation and Pennsylvania, many employers have adopted substance abuse policies or are in the process of putting policies in place. However, in light of Pennsylvania's Medical Marijuana Law, the American's With Disabilities Act and OSHA's new rule which calls into question mandatory post-accident testing programs, companies must carefully consider how to handle drug and alcohol issues in the workplace. We will discuss the essential elements of a substance abuse policy.

We look forward to seeing you at this day packed full of human resources management help and education!
