Eastern Gas Transmission and Storage: Powering the Future with Safety and Sustainability

Eastern Gas Transmission and Storage (EGTS), a BHE GT&S company, provides safe, reliable, and affordable natural gas transportation and storage services across Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. With nearly 4,000 miles of pipeline and over 985,000 horsepower of compression, EGTS operates one of the largest underground natural gas storage systems in the United States – an extensive network that links major pipeline markets in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast regions and ensures a steady energy supply for utilities, power plants, and local distribution companies.

The Capital Area Project: Meeting Growing Energy Needs

To address increasing energy demands, EGTS has proposed the Capital Area Project (CAP), which aims to enhance the capacity of the existing PL-1 pipeline system by adding compression, delivering an additional 67,500 dekatherms per day (dth/d) from Transco-Leidy in Clinton County, Pennsylvania, to the Loudoun Station in Loudoun County, Virginia.

Notably, no new pipeline facilities are required to bring this project to fruition, as it includes updates to compressor stations in three Pennsylvania counties—Centre, Clinton, and Franklin—and Loudoun County in Virginia. With a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) application filed in late 2024, construction is set to begin in 2026 pending necessary approvals. The project is expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2027.

EGTS prioritizes safety and environmental respect in every aspect of its operations and adheres to local, state, and federal regulations. The company is a leader in accident prevention and maintains rigorous safety and security programs – including its Environmental RESPECT policy, which guides its responsibility, efficiency, stewardship, performance, evaluation, communication, and training efforts. The company also implements best practices to protect biodiversity and minimize environmental impacts during the planning and construction of new facilities.

Future-Focused Investments in Energy and Community

EGTS is committed to reducing methane emissions and, as a member of the ONE Future Coalition, aims to reduce methane emissions across the natural gas value chain to less than 1 percent by 2025. The company also supports community efforts to preserve and enhance the environment through grants to organizations like the Keystone Elk Country Alliance and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy / BHE GT&S Watershed Mini Grant Program.

The Capital Area Project will generate economic benefits for Pennsylvania communities by creating short-term construction jobs, purchasing goods and services from local providers, and contributing to community events and economic development. “The PA Chamber added its pro-busiess, pro-growth voice to the FERC’s project docket.  We value the Chamber’s advocacy efforts to support growth projects in Pennsylvania,” added Don Houser, State Policy Director for BHE GT&S. EGTS is dedicated to transparent communication and proactive outreach with landowners, neighbors, and stakeholders throughout the project’s planning, construction, and operational phases.

Corporate Citizenship and Ongoing Outreach

With a long history in the region, EGTS continues to build and operate natural gas facilities in the Mid-Atlantic region, communicating with communities early in the project process to help them understand and address concerns, and ensuring that stakeholders are informed and involved.

For more information or to provide feedback, EGTS encourages community members to connect with them through their established communication channels. Together, EGTS and the communities it serves are working towards a sustainable and energy-efficient future.
