Vistra Expands Operations in Pennsylvania With Two-Unit Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Plant

Vistra, the nation’s largest competitive power generation and retail electricity company, is growing its presence in Pennsylvania. The company is the proud new owner of Pennsylvania’s two-unit Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Plant, which it acquired in March from Energy Harbor, along with the Perry and Davis-Besse nuclear plants in Ohio and Energy Harbor’s retail business. Vistra now operates four power plants across Pennsylvania – Beaver Valley, Fayette, Liberty, and Ontelaunee.

“This integration represents our commitment to leading a responsible transformation of the country’s energy supply to greener energy sources through the expansion of our zero-carbon generation portfolio while prioritizing reliable and affordable electricity for our customers,” said Jim Burke, Vistra president and chief executive officer. “We now own the second-largest competitive nuclear fleet in the U.S., complementing our existing reliable, flexible, and dispatchable generation assets and our leading retail business.”

As Pennsylvania and the rest of the country expect electricity consumption to increase in the coming years, Vistra is well-positioned to help meet that demand. The addition of the three nuclear plants grows Vistra’s generation capacity by more than 4,000 megawatts to approximately 41,000 MW total. PJM—the regional transmission organization for Pennsylvania and 12 other eastern states—doubled its load-growth expectations through 2030 from its 2023 estimate. Data centers and other new technologies are projected to become large consumers of electricity; third-party research indicates data center-related activity could reach 35,000 MW of additional demand by 2030.

With the acquisition complete, Vistra now employs about 6,800 people across the country and markets its products and services in all major competitive wholesale power markets in the U.S. Through its many retail brands, it serves approximately 5 million residential, business, and commercial/industrial customers.

The combined company’s headquarters are in Irving, Texas, with regional offices in Houston; Akron, Cincinnati, and Columbus, Ohio; King of Prussia, Pennsylvania; and Collinsville and Oak Brook, Illinois.

Vistra is guided by its core principles, which include doing business the right way and caring about its stakeholders. With generation and retail operations in 18 states, including Pennsylvania, Vistra invests where employees and customers live and work.

Committed to Community

Since 2019, Vistra and its leading Pennsylvania retail electricity brands, Dynegy and Energy Harbor, have donated more than half a million dollars to support community partners making a difference locally. Through meaningful investments, the company is addressing needs and strengthening communities by partnering with food pantries, schools, fire departments, homeless shelters, and organizations focused on environmental sustainability, equity, and doing good, including the Urban Leagues of Philadelphia and Greater Pittsburgh, Philabundance, and Coded by Kids.

Since 2020, Dynegy has donated more than $100,000 while serving as the corporate sponsor for the Dollar Energy Fund’s annual Cool Down For Warmth fundraiser. The funds raised help senior citizens, adults, and families facing economic hardships who need extra help paying their energy bills.

Working with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School in Philadelphia, Dynegy invested nearly $100,000 to plant 100 trees on the school campus and another 25 on streets adjacent to or near Bethune. The immediate benefits include more shade relief in a neighborhood where temperatures are regularly 4 degrees higher than Philadelphia’s average.

On the other side of the Commonwealth, Vistra and Dynegy partnered with “Tree Pittsburgh” to help replace thousands of acres of tree canopy lost over the years. Already, more than 900 trees have been planted throughout the city on the Eliza Furnace Trail and in Highland Park, Schenley Park, the Hazelwood Greenway, Chateau Trail, Polish Hill Gold Way, Polish Hill West Penn Park, and the Allegheny River Greenway.

Vistra’s power plants — Liberty in Eddystone, Delaware County; Ontelaunee in Reading, Berks County; and Fayette in Masontown, Fayette County; and now Beaver Valley in Beaver County — support their local communities with thousands in donations annually.

These investments provide meaningful, direct, and sustainable social benefits that strengthen the communities where Vistra does business, where their plants operate, and where their valued employees call home.
